Dear God,
How are you? I’m well. Not much new is going on since we last spoke. Mostly I’ve just been staying indoors trying to survive the arctic weather you sent down my way a few weeks ago. That was a really funny joke. Oh yeah! I also sat for another section of the CPA exam. I think it went okay, but I haven’t gotten the results back yet. I’ll let you know how it goes.
So what’s new with you? Easter’s coming up in about a month, right? I’ll bet you’re excited about that. I’m pretty excited too. We just finished celebrating Presidents’ Day on Monday. I had to work despite the holiday, but I guess that doesn’t necessarily detract from its meaning. I made sure to toast Lincoln (screw those other guys) with a glass of Malbec that evening.
So, anywho. Speaking of Easter. I wanted to talk to you about Lent this year, and, more importantly, my Lenten sacrifice. Remember how for the past five years my sacrifice was that I had to make my bed every day? And before that, the year that I gave up chewing gum? And that one crazy time in college when I gave up meat for you?!
Those were good times.
I was planning on running with my old standby of making my bed again this year, but was inspired (by you? Or maybe Jesus? Hi Jesus!) with a great idea yesterday. I’m going to subject myself to the most difficult of Lenten challenges this year. Specifically for a non-domesticated, single person like me. I’m going to…
Not go out to eat for the next 40 days starting tomorrow.
You know how much I eat out. At a minimum half my meals originate from outside my home. This is going to be really hard! I’ve decided that I’m not going to give myself any Sunday dispensations either, and I love Sunday dispensations.
Okay. That’s pretty much all I’ve got. I hope you and Jesus and Mary and Joseph are all doing well. Say ‘hey’ to my Grandma Kitty and Mimi and Bompa for me.
Smell you later. (Ha, ha.)
Your lamb,
Emily
p.s. How come women can’t be priests?

I always try to find an excuse to use the word "Sanctimonious." The context is never right.
I like the idea of giving things up. For Lent, I'll give up bloggering for 40 days. No. I'll give up my cell phone for 40 days. No. I'll walk to work for 40 days. No. Maybe I'll give up trying to think of a lenten sacrifice. There we go. This is going to be easy.
Does this mean you have to cook your meals? Or does Lean Cuisine still count?
I don't know what Sassette smurf would think about that.
I knew my parents were onto something when they chose not to raise me Catholic. Thank God! Enjoy your Kraft Mac & Cheese! ;)
I gave up my Diet Pepsi for Lent on year in college, (no Sunday dispensations, either!) and it was torture. I've got to get on it and figure out what this year will be about, I was also thinking somewhere along the lines of no take-out/fast food, but I'm not 100% committed to that yet. We shall see.
PS: Don't forget to eat your paczki today. It's good for you.
Think Frustrated -- I like the word sanctimonious too. It has a nice ring to it. Also, I think you're making a big mistake by not going with a Lenten sacrifice. I've heard that God gives you three wishes if you succeed.
the dummy -- hell yes, lean cuisine or any other instant frozen version of food counts. I'll be eating a lot of that stuff over the next forty days.
girl and dog -- so true. Plus you get to go through life without 'Catholic Guilt'.
meghan -- it's funny that you mentioned the paczkis. Those are a Polish tradition, right? At any rate, I'd never heard of them prior to moving to Chicago, and, when I saw some sitting out in our cafeteria at lunch today, I asked somebody why they had donuts set out during lunch. I sounded like a total rube.
Whoa whoa whoa. That's quite a sacrifice. I would probably die if I didn't go to Clarks for an omelette at least once a week.
One year my Man's mom went to church every day for 40 days. She's pretty much going straight to Heaven, I'd say.
That's a pretty big sacrifice. I sure hope god appreciates it. i hate it when god has entitlement issues. good luck.
That was a hilarious post. Well done indeed. I think He already knows how you did on your exam though.
If you speak to Him again soon, put in a good word for me, okay? We haven't spoken in years. Mostly my bad, but He's not without a little blame. Water over the bridge, I say. Or wine. Whatever.
Wow. Wow. I'd probably have gone with the bed making thing again. Good luck! I mean, blessings!
And here I was thinking that giving up my daily mochachino was a biggie.
Lent on...
This post made me do a brief inventory of how often I grab a meal outside of home...and I don't like the answer.
Good luck!
I love this time of year when my co-workers give up things for lent. Your choice this year is one of the hardest I've heard for our present times.
Does that include an appetizer or bar snacks if you are out having drinks with friends?
Fortunately, the only requirement by my religion during lent in to save a quarter a day in a little folder and I have to eat a pepperoni and sausage pizza from Dewey’s every Friday.

Hm. 40 days and no take out? I don't know... I'm aiming for 40 days of not ripping my hair out because of Boy 1's behavior. That will take both will power and a miracle.
Also? The smiting thing? I'd like to know too. And if you do, can we put in requests?
I used to give up some kind of unhealthy and delicious food every lenten season and then finally realized that ain't religion, that's just a good old fashioned diet.
I would NEVER be able to stick to this plan. Vaya con dios.
Did you email this letter to God? Does he have an email address?
If you fail lent do you have to go back to the end of the line?
Catholics seem to have the most labor intense religion.
killer -- you don't have God's email address? I thought everybody did. It's:
god_2000@hotmail.com
god@hotmail.com was already taken.
Damn, I'm going to be in Chicago next week and was hoping to take you out to a super fancy expensive restaurant. We can still go if you want and you can just sit there an watch me eat. What do you say?
Your Lenten Challenge traker in the top left hand corner just really makes me want lamb chops sooooo bad.
Baaaaa.... yummmmmm.
Good luck with that. I think you will be very pleasantly surprised with the results. I decided a while back that I HAD to cut down on eating out myself. Not for lent or anything like that, but for simple monetary reasons. It was amazing to me to find out how much I was spending on eating out. I started cooking myself and was pleasantly surprised that I didn't screw em all up. Now(though not recently) I cook almost everything that I eat. If you like Pot roast and own a crock pot, I will even get you started with an easy one that I very HIGHLY reccomend. It is an old recipe that I posted about a long time ago. Give it a shot if you like. If not ignore it.
Anywhoo here it is

Jeez. Good luck. This resolution has me on the edge of my seat, and everything David Blaine does makes me go "meh."
